Memorial School, containing grades five through eight, is unique in many ways and is recognized for providing students with a quality education, as well as a safe school with modern surveillance equipment.  All grades are departmentalized with two consecutive periods for math and language arts daily.  The academic program has been expanded and diversified.  All attendance procedures, grade reporting, transcript issuance and student report cards are fully computerized.  These reports can be generated through the programs installed in the district’s data bank.
The year began in an organized and orderly manner.  From the first day, students began their academic journey to success.  The annual “get acquainted” 5th grade breakfast sponsored by the Memorial School Home & School Association was held in early September.  Parents, staff and the 5th grade students all enjoyed the breakfast and the start of new relationships and friendships.  Back to School Night will occur at the end of September at which time parents can meet their child’s teachers.  The traditional seventh grade trip to Boston and the 8th grade trip to Washington, DC will be held once again this year.  The 6th grade will be traveling to New York City and in May, the 5th grades will once again take an all day trip to Philadelphia.  These trips continue to be educationally rewarding experiences.  There are student council activities and the Home and School Association holds monthly dances, as well as holiday celebrations and educational assemblies.  We have partnered with Montclair State University incorporating the PRISM Program into our Science classes.
Mini-murals throughout the school continue to be completed portraying various scenes as themes.  The Internet has been established in all classrooms along with power point capabilities in many others. We are continuing our efforts to upgrade technology in the classrooms throughout the building.  Memorial School’s curriculum is comprehensive and constantly being reviewed.  Students are challenged to achieve to their highest maximum potential.  Standardized test scores are continuing to grow in all areas.
This year will be an exciting and stimulating one for all students and staff.  I am looking forward to the instituting of the new schedules, programs and curriculum that our school now has.  I wish all students, parents and staff a productive and enjoyable year.
