    Reading Fluency and Comprehension Strategies 
     
    Before Reading
    Read the title of the book.
    Take a "picture walk" through the book.
    Predict what the book is about from the title and by looking at the pictures.
     
    During Reading
    Make a movie in your head by thinking about the story while you are reading.
     
    Figure out new words by:
    Using your finger to point under each word   
    Using beginning sounds     
    Using ending sounds     
    Looking at the pictures on the page     
    Using word chunks     
    Looking for a smaller word within the word    
    Reading to the end of the sentence      
    Rereading the sentence
     
    Make predictions - "What do you think will happen next in the story?"

     
    Make connections: Does this story remind you of another story you read?  (Text to Text Connection)    
    Did something like this happen to you? (Text to Self Connection)    
    Does it make you think about something in real life?  (Text to World Connection)
     
    After Reading
    What did you think of the story?:
    How did it make you feel?
    Did you like this story? Why or why not?
    Would you recommend this book to a friend? 
     
    Retell the important parts of the story:  
    What happened at the beginning of the story?
    Who were the characters in the story?
    What did the characters do in the story?
    How did the characters feel? 
     
    What happened in the the middle of the story?
    What was the problem in the story?
    How did the characters feel?
    What happened at the end of the story?
    What was the solution to the problem?
     
    How did the characters feel: 
    Did the characters change throughout the story?
