Algebra 1 Criteria

8th Grade Algebra 1 Criteria and Information (9th Grade Course)

  • Memorial Middle School and Passaic Valley Algebra 1 Curriculum

Memorial Middle School works closely with PV High School to provide any student who qualifies to take Algebra 1 in 8th grade a curriculum that supports the critical understanding to describe linear and quadratic relationships, notions of expressions and equations that are foundational to the study of Algebra.  All standards in Algebra 1 include recognizing equations as statements of equality between two expressions and recognizing expressions as records reflecting computation with numbers and symbols that represent numbers.

  • At Woodland Park, Memorial Mustang students are engaged through multiple mathematical modalities that ensures high quality learning through our NJSLS curriculum and instruction which enables every student to reach their highest potential.

Students will be empowered in all math classrooms to succeed with personalized resources that fit each student’s interests and growth in the field of mathematics.

Ultimately, the goal of our Mustang mathematics department is to support and develop students’ identities as learners of mathematics (Anderson, 2007).

Our curriculum includes the New Jersey mathematical practices:

    • Mathematical Practice #1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

    • Mathematical Practice # 2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

    • Mathematical Practice #3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reason for others

    • Mathematical Practice #4: Model with mathematics.

    • Mathematical Practice #5: Use appropriate tools strategically

    • Mathematical Practice #6: Attend to precision.

    • Mathematical Practice #7: Look for and make use of structure.

    • Mathematical Practice #8: Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
